Chichen-Itza The Maya name "Chichen Itza" means "at the mouth of the well of the Itza"; and is one of the most famous Mayan archaeological sites of the civilization. Chichen Itza is today a UNESCO World Heritage Center; its various structures such as the Temple of Kukulcan often referred to as "El Castillo" (the castle), the Temple of Chac Mool, the Hall of the Thousand Pillars, and the Playing Field of the Prisoners can still be seen today and are demonstrative of an extraordinary commitment to architectural space and composition. On the spring and autumn equinox, at the rising and setting of the sun, the corner of the structure casts a shadow in the shape of a plumed serpent - Kukulcan, or Quetzalcoatl - along the side of the north staircase of the Pyramid of Kukulcan. Officially known today as one of the 7 Wonders of the World, Chichen Itza is a must-see when visiting the Mexican Caribbean. Follow the Mayan footprints in an all day-tour to a series of legendary monuments and legends, admire stunning views and explore Mayan remains that rest in the mystical jungle. Then, head to swim in Ik-Kil, a natural sink hole known as ‘Cenote’ surrounded by cave formations with crystal clear waters. Cenotes played an important role in Mayan rites; human sacrifices and valuable objects were thrown into the cenote as a form of worship to the Maya rain god Chaac and it is also believed that some were kept as the secret baths of the Maya Kings and their courtesans. Today Ik-Kil is one of the most beautiful cenotes of the region; with its turquoise waters, lush exotic vegetation and peaceful atmosphere makes it a wonderful place to swim. Continue your journey to marvel with the colonial sights of Valladolid city, and enjoy lunch at a traditional Restaurant with fun entertainment. Immerse in a fascinating cultural experience all day long! We recommend bringing along: Swimsuit, Change of clothes, Biodegradable Repellent & Sunscreen, Tennis shoes, Sandals, Towel, Camera, Hat and sunglasses.
